The Modern Pilgrim's Journey

The Compromised Church- Twinkie Theology and Kool-Aid Doctrine

The Modern Pilgrim #30- Pilgrim continues to search for the Good Shepherd and the other pilgrims, stopping to rest in another church with open doors. Thinking she’s found a compatible group of pilgrims inside, she’s shocked to discover that these folks think that the Good Shepherd is but one of many good shepherds who are all divine sons of God. Pilgrim wearily returns to the road.

In the 1960’s a generation of mothers and homemakers discovered the convenience of prepared convenience foods. Meals and snacks in boxes and little aluminum trays.

Instead of peeling, slicing, boiling and mashing potatoes, one could simply add milk and butter to potato flakes.

Instead of beating heavy cream for fifteen minutes, one could whip up a box of Jiffy Whip in three. Or a few years later, buy Cool Whip.

Instead of all the food preparation involved in making Salisbury steak, au gratin potatoes, green beans, and apple cobbler, one could simply tuck a TV dinner into the oven.

Instead of good old apple juice, my mom became the Kool-Aid mom in the neighborhood, with the pitcher and everything. After all, it was fortified with vitamins, right?

Like me, my mother did not enjoy daily cooking and embraced these new foods. When convenience products hit the market, commercial advertisers assured conscientious moms that they were all “fortified with vitamins and minerals.” Bunko on that.

The lure of saving time and energy on food prep and clean up was powerful, and still is. Unfortunately, we’ve learned that modifying foods so drastically also removes their naturally digestible and absorb-able nutrients, for the most part.

There is some current theology, doctrine and practice I’m encountering in the modern church, that reminds me of those prepared foods. False teaching is convenient and comfortable. It embraces whatever flow the worldly culture is taking on a matter. Avoids all the work of debates and challenging conversations. Lifts the burden to dig into the meat of the Word out on our own, and search matters out for ourselves.

We don’t want to argue with folks about abortion, so let’s allow it to be a mother’s choice.

We don’t want to get in dust ups with the lesbian and homosexual community, so we welcome and condone this sin in pulpits and leadership roles within the church. We embrace the sinner AND their sin.

We want to create unity with people of other faiths, so why can’t we just agree that God is but one name for the Supreme being, along with Allah and others.

That whole concept of hell makes people so uncomfortable so let’s be certain we assure them that a loving God would never send someone to hell. It probably doesn’t exist anyway so why worry about it?

And how about that whole inerrancy of the Bible idea? Does it really matter if Jonah and the big fish is a true story? What matters is the truth inside of that story; that God wants us to listen and obey him.

In I Timothy 4:3-4, the Apostle Paul says, For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

All the above examples are taken from real sermons, conversations, podcasts, and websites I’ve seen or heard over the last twenty years or so. They are false doctrines and myths. What grieves my heart is how pervasive these kinds of teachings have become. Many congregations are being fed a diet of junk food theology and doctrine. And now that hell is exploding in our culture, many Christians are too spiritually undernourished to do anything significant about it beyond wringing their hands and continuously saying, “I just don’t understand what is happening in our country.”

Satan has waited for this moment in time. A moment when the body of Christ is weak from poor spiritual nutrition. A moment when many are so desperate to fit into their culture, they’d rather rage against a fellow believer they disagree with, than stand up boldly in the marketplace, sharing God’s good news for sinners. A moment when Christians are more invested in their comfort than the cause of Christ. And so, Satan strikes like a viper, injecting the poison of fear, anarchy, division, and strife into our entire culture to hasten us towards the rule of the Antichrist.

He thinks the bride of Christ is too weak from eating theological Twinkies and drinking Kool-Aid doctrine, to be an effective anti-venom. Well, he’s wrong. But not entirely. Portions of the church remain in their holy huddles, but others are taking it to the streets. Still others fight from their prayer closets, doing mighty spiritual warfare.

Reports are surfacing of worship services, revival meetings, baptisms and such occurring on city streets, beaches, and neighborhood sidewalks. Back yard Bible studies are springing up since they can’t meet in churches. Finally, small fractions of the body of Christ are coming out from their lovely worship centers into the places where sinners gather. It’s about time.

I’m challenging you today to do a spiritual nutrition check. Are you eating the pure meat of the Word, undiluted by cultural trends and shifts? Do you know what you believe and why, based solidly on the WHOLE Word of God, not just particular verses twisted around to fit a popular narrative? Have you searched matters out yourself or are you merely eating the pre-digested food of others on social media, like a baby bird?  If you desire to be an authentic warrior for God in these last days, there needs to be a purging of any false doctrine from your spiritual armor. Those are weak spots where the enemy will target you. And fence-sitting Christians? Get off that fence before you fall. Satan owns the fence.

If you long to be a reaper in the great harvest of souls God is bringing, your spiritual muscles must be in top shape. Would you today ask God to reveal to you any place where you may have internalized thinking and behaviors that run contrary to God’s Word?  Be ready to let go of some false paradigms and popular teaching, cause the Bridegroom is eager to serve his bride steak, instead of Spam.
